Captain Watson
Chester Harbour
Good Evening,
Wow, I don't know what it was like where you were today but here the NW wind kept it wonderfully cool. On these hot sunny days, the black hull of the ship heats up and it becomes quite uncomfortable at times. Days like today allow us to change the air around a bit and blow the deck shoe stink away.
Today the second half of the crew, including the engineer, went racing with the schooners. They were treated to a really exciting race and quite a few of the vessels were rail down as roared past us in the minutes prior to the start. I watched one boat posting speeds near 10 knots which isn't bad for a 65 foot schooner!
The watch that stayed onboard worked very hard today and managed to varnish a great deal of the ship. Slowly she is getting her shine back. Of course there is always more to do but we are catching up!
We have been visited by a great many boats as we lie in the beautiful harbour here in Chester. Kayaks, classic motor boats, lapstrake rowing dingys, classic sailing yachts, and yachts both power and sail of fiberglass. They have been coming by the droves and taking pictures. I enjoy it as to me it means that Bluenose and Bluenose II are still important to people. These aren't tourists that are taking pictures they are locals. This is their history and they are remembering it here while we are at anchor. Cool!!!
We will heave up tomorrow morning at 0900 and hopefully sail out of the bay. If the weather is fine we may not be able to return to Lunenburg due to activities on our wharf until sometime in the evening. I'm hoping the wind, weather and time will allow us to sail past Peggy's Cove and still arrive in Lunenburg at the appointed time. That's one of the wonderful things about sailing, you never really know what the day will bring. The forecast is not a promise of what is to come, just a possibility for tomorrow.
It's flat calm here and the sun is setting, I'm going to enjoy the sunset and peace. That's all for tonight,
Best Regards,
Phil Watson
